I’m Sophie. I’m a Vietnamese living in Canada with my husband, Hai.
Hai and I moved from Vietnam to Canada in 2015. Hai did his MBA at Roman, University of Toronto, while I finished my MBA at Sauder, University of British Columbia. In 2018, Hai moved to Vancouver, ending our 2.5 years of a long-distance relationship. After a year of living on the extreme side of “You Live Only Once,” we faced the excruciating reality of family planning and financial planning. Though we love working and could be considered workaholics, we want to be financially independent and enrich our life experience with more time for friends and family. Without a goal, a plan, and discipline, we know we are heading toward troubles.
“Books allow you to fully explore a topic and immerse yourself in a deeper way than most media today.”
Mark Zuckerberg
In 2020, when covid turned the world upside down, Hai and I immersed ourselves in reading, cycling, and writing. 80% of Hai’s reading lists are about personal finance. I read mostly about psychology, business, self-help, and writing. His passion is to read all books about personal finance to get better at making financial decisions. He hopes to accelerate our path to financial freedom and then share it with our friends and family. My passion is to make his goals happen two times faster than planned. How am I planning to make it happen? I believe we can achieve it by writing this blog, sharing what we learn, living it every day, and potentially learning from readers. I like to write about the books we read and what works for us. If Mark Manson is about “life advice that doesn’t suck,” I write about “advice on financial decisions that don’t stink.”
This blog aims to share our tools box in building a healthy relationship with money and ultimately achieve financial freedom. In this box, you can decide which tools work for your circumstances.
Blogging is stressful in many ways: coming up with ideas and the worries of how my writing and opinions are received and judged. I am learning to let go of the fear of being judged, but it still exists within me. In sharing this blog, I exercise my right to write and share my ideas. You can exercise your right to read, commenting, sharing your feedback, and applying our concepts. I can’t control how you will respond, but I do hope you comment with kindness. In the end, no one is perfect. What works for us might not work for you. Only you know your circumstances best, so choose wisely :).
When we are not working, writing, or reading, we spend time outdoor doing road cycling, snowboarding, or travelling (when it was allowed).
